The author of the photocollage used the portrait photography of Anton Chekhov (Анто́н Па́влович Че́хов, 1860-1904) - a Russian playwright and short story writer, who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short fiction in history. The photo has been taken in the atelier of Andriej E. Ovsjarenko in Moscow in 1904 - in the year of the death of the writer.
It is the best known portrait photography of Chekhov.
Mieczyslaw Berman has given the "Thinker" as a gift to Jerzy Pomianowski after the one-man show exhibition in 1961 in Zacheta in Warsaw. Pomianowski was a writer, columnist and journalist, for many years a collaborator of paris "Culture" (a leading Polish-émigré literary-political magazin). Jerzy Pomianowski was also a splendid translator of russian literature, among others: the books by Mikhail Bulgakov (Михаи́л Афана́сьевич Булга́ков), Aleksandr Isayevich (Алекса́ндр Иса́евич Солжени́цын), Leo Tolstoy (Лев Никола́евич Толсто́й), Anna Akhmatova (Анна Ахматова) and Anton Chekhov (Анто́н Па́влович Че́хов).
